Brigadier Mark Phillips

Brigadier Mark Phillips graduated from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in September 1981.  He was then commissioned into the Guyana Defence Force as a Second Lieutenant in February 1982. 
 
He completed the Basic Parachute and Jumpmaster courses in Brazil in 1984. In 1985 he completed the Junior Command and Staff Course and in 1990 the Senior Command and Staff Course in Guyana.  He graduated from the Defence Planning and Resource Management Course at the Centre for Hemispheric Defence Studies (now the Perry Center) of the National Defence University, Washington D.C in 2003, the US Army Command and General Staff Course in 2005, Canadian Security Study Programme # 10 in 2008 at Canadian Forces College and Advanced Diploma in Hemispheric Defence Studies at the Inter-American Defence College, Washington DC in June 2011.
 
His civilian education includes a Diploma in Public Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Management from the University of Guyana, and a Masters’ Degree in Public Sector Management from La Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madrey Maestria in the Dominican Republic.  He speaks English and Spanish.
 
Brigadier Mark Phillips’ command and staff appointments throughout his career, include: Platoon Commander, Troop Commander, Company Commander, Base Commander; Staff Officer 1, Generals 1, 2 & 3, Colonel Administration and Quartering, Colonel General Staff, Inspector General in the Defence Headquarters and Guyana’s Non-Resident Military Attaché to Venezuela.
 
Brigadier Phillips was appointed the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force in September 2013 and will retired on Wednesday 2016-10-05.
 
Brigadier  Phillips’ awards include the Military Service Star, the Military Service Medal, Border Defence Medal, the Military Efficiency Medal, the 50th, 40th and 25th Anniversary Medals.  His foreign decorations include the Star of Carabobo from Venezuela, the Admiral Tamandare and the Peacekeeper Medals from Brazil.
 
He is happily married to Mignon Bowen-Phillips and is the father of four
