CDS Brigadier Omar Khan Opens National Security Series with Deep Dive into Border Defence and Service to Guyana

Written by

Welcome to the inaugural episode of Safeguarding Our Nation, a national conversation series that brings citizens face-to-face with the men and women entrusted with protecting Guyana. In this timely and engaging series, we explore issues of security, leadership, and public trust, starting at our borders and reaching into our communities.

In this first episode, we speak with Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Defence Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), a career officer with over three decades of military experience and service across multiple administrations. Brigadier Khan offers an unfiltered and authoritative look into the realities of national defence, the evolving security landscape, and his personal journey in the GDF.

Defending Guyana’s Sovereignty Amid Escalating Tensions

With Venezuela intensifying its territorial claims, including illegal referenda and infrastructure projects such as the bridge to Ankoko Island, questions around national sovereignty are at the forefront. Brigadier Khan reaffirms the GDF’s unwavering commitment to defending Guyana’s borders under the binding 1899 Arbitral Award.

He outlines a modern, integrated defence strategy rooted in building a smart, resilient force. The GDF’s posture, he explains, is not only military but also diplomatic, informational, and economic, anchored in the Diplomacy, Information, Military and Economic (DIME) construct. Strategic alliances with key partners like the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and CARICOM reinforce Guyana’s commitment to international law and peace, even amidst political provocations.

Strategic Deterrence Over Sheer Size

Despite Venezuela’s superior numbers, Brigadier Khan challenges the assumption that size dictates strength. “size doesn’t translate into success….,” he states. By investing in technology, strengthening training, and fostering partnerships, the GDF is actively reshaping Guyana’s defensive posture.

Recent investments have increased the defence budget by over 800% in five years, including maritime and aerial surveillance capabilities. These strategic acquisitions aim to secure Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and bolster maritime resilience.

Combatting Border Crime Through Joint Operations

The western frontier is not only a site of geopolitical tension but also a hotspot for transnational criminal activity—arms trafficking, illegal mining, drug smuggling, and unauthorised airstrips. The GDF plays a supporting but crucial role in addressing these threats through inter-agency collaboration under the Joint Services Coordinating Council.

From surveillance and interdiction to logistical support, the Defence Force is actively partnering with the Police Force, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), and other agencies. A recent joint operation resulted in the seizure of over four tonnes of cocaine in Region One—an example of the integrated approach to border security.

Balancing Compassion with Control: The Migrant Crisis

Brigadier Khan speaks candidly and humanely about the growing influx of Venezuelan migrants into Guyana. He reflects on the “embarrassment, shame, and loss of dignity” witnessed among families seeking refuge. Despite limited resources, Guyana’s response remains guided by compassionate pragmatism, ensuring thorough vetting, documentation, and security, all within a multi-agency framework involving health, law enforcement, and regional authorities.

The GDF’s role in humanitarian operations is also highlighted, with recent deployments to Grenada and St. Vincent to assist in post-disaster reconstruction, reaffirming the military’s contribution beyond combat operations.

A Personal Call to Service: Brigadier Khan’s Journey

In an impassioned appeal to the nation’s youth, Brigadier Khan recounts his own path into military service. From a place of uncertainty after secondary school, he chose the GDF over conventional banking jobs, setting out for what was to be a short-term commitment. Thirty years later, he stands as the 12th Chief of Defence Staff.

He challenges young people to find purpose, passion, and patriotism through national service:

“In the military, you will find yourself. Even if you come for three years, you will discover your true self.”

From engineers to pilots, cybersecurity experts to disaster relief officers, the GDF offers a transformative platform for those willing to serve.

A National Dialogue Begins

As Guyana navigates the complexities of sovereignty, migration, and regional instability, Safeguarding Our Nation provides an essential space for public dialogue and engagement. Brigadier Khan’s insights serve as a reminder that defence is not just about deterrence, but also about values, institutions, and collective responsibility.
