Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, today met with the soldiers of the Force’s athletic team to commend their outstanding performances at the Ariza National Championship, held on March 15–16, 2025, at Grenada’s Kirani James National Stadium.
Brigadier Khan congratulated the team and their coach and lauded their commitment, sacrifices and resilience in preparation for the event. He reiterated his commitment to investing in soldiers’ holistic development, ensuring they excel in their military roles and personal pursuits.

The team’s success was anchored by standout performances across disciplines. Senior Petty Officer Leslain Baird secured 2nd place in the javelin with a powerful throw of 70.14 meters, while Sergeant Akeem Stewart blazed to 1st place in the Men’s Invitational 100M with a lightning-fast 10.59 seconds. Private Nicholas Daw dominated the track with double victories in the 400M (49.37 seconds) and 800M (1:54.18), showcasing his versatility. Meanwhile, Private Savanah Adams made history as the sole female GDF competitor, sprinting to 2nd place in the Women’s 100M with a time of 12.07 seconds earning her a special commendation from Brigadier Khan.
Drawing on a core military principle, Brigadier Khan emphasized that victory lies in “the nature of the effort, not just the outcome.” He urged the athletes to embrace their roles as mentors, adding, “Your achievements will inspire others. Share your journeys, guide your peers, and take pride in uplifting those around you. The discipline that brought you here must now light the way for others.”
The Force’s athletes who delivered commendable performances over the past year, along with those who supported their efforts, will be honoured at an upcoming appreciation event.
