Colonel Ronald J. Pope was a British officer who played a pivotal role in the formation and early development of the Guyana Defence Force. He was appointed as the first Chief of Staff in May 1967, a position he held until March 1969. During his tenure, Colonel Pope was instrumental in organizing and training the Special Service Unit (SSU), which later evolved into the GDF.
