Major General Michael Atherly joined the GDF as a cadet in October 1970 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on May 29, 1971. He steadily rose through the ranks, being promoted to Major in 1981, Brigadier in 1990, and Major General on May 1, 2004. He served as Chief of Staff from April 2000 until his retirement on August 30, 2004. Following his retirement, Major General Atherly took on the role of Director General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), where he continued to contribute to national security and disaster preparedness
