COAST GUARD RESPONDS TO SINKING BARGE IN DEMERARA RIVER

Written by

The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, earlier this morning, responded promptly to a distress call regarding the tug Captain Chad Michael and its attached barge, which were reportedly sinking mid-channel in the Demerara Harbour approach.

Upon arrival, Coast Guard ranks observed that the bow of the barge was submerged and the crew was actively attempting to pump out water. The Coast Guard immediately deployed additional pumps to support the operation and helped stabilize the situation.

The barge, which was transporting a cargo of molasses, had eportedly developed a breach in its side, causing water to enter and partially submerge the vessel. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Coast Guard and the crew, the barge was stabilized and

safely towed to the Molasses Wharf at Kingston.

The relevant maritime authorities, including the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), were informed and are monitoring the situation.

The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard remains committed to ensuring the safety of all vessels operating within Guyana’s territorial waters and thanks the responding officers for their swift and professional action.
