DHQ TRIUMPHS AT GDF’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY INTER-UNIT ATHLETICS AND SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Strength, unity, and endurance were on full display at Base Camp Ayanganna yesterday as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 60th Anniversary Inter-Unit Athletics and Swimming Championships drew to a thrilling close. From October 5 to 10, 2025, participants pushed the limits of strength, skill, and teamwork in a week-long display of athletic excellence.

The championships kicked off with Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, lighting the ceremonial torch, symbolizing six decades of perseverance and unity within the Force.

Over the week, the events highlighted the best of military sportsmanship; discipline, determination, and teamwork. Families, veterans, and community members lined the track, cheering for their favourite units, reflecting the strong bond between the GDF and the public it serves. Spectators were treated to a vivid display of energy and support as units rallied behind their athletes, creating a spectacle of colour, cheers, and camaraderie, a fitting tribute to the Force’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Defence Headquarters (DHQ) emerged as overall champion, amassing 532 points through stellar performances. The Coast Guard finished second with 358 points, and the One Infantry Battalion (1 Inf BN) secured third place with 245.5 points. Top units received monetary prizes, and outstanding individual athletes and swimmers were also recognized with trophies and cash awards. In the march past competition, the 4 Engineers Battalion claimed first place, followed by the Training Corps in second, and 1 Inf BN third, reflecting the hallmark precision of the GDF.

As the championships concluded, the 60th Anniversary Inter-Unit Championships stood as a reminder that military sports go beyond competition, fostering endurance, character, and unity among the ranks. Through events like these, the GDF continues to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and operational excellence.

The 2025 Championships celebrated not only victory on the field but also six decades of service, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Guyana Defence Force.
