The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has commissioned its newest fixed-wing aircraft, the Tecnam P2012, at a ceremony held at the Air Corps Hangar, Eugene F. Correia International Airport. The consecration was witnessed by a distinguished gathering including His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, MSS, members of the Defence Board, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, senior officers, heads of the disciplined services, representatives from the local aviation sector, and officials from the Civil Aviation Authority.

In his address, President Ali emphasized that acquiring the Tecnam P2012 is a significant step in the GDF’s transformation into a modern, agile, and mission-ready force. He described the aircraft as “not just a flight machine, but a tool; a weapon of readiness; a vessel of sovereignty; a bridge to our hinterland, and a lifeline in times of distress.” The President highlighted that building the Air Corps’ capacity is “front and centre” in his government’s national security strategy, underscoring its vital role in protecting Guyana’s exclusive economic zone, maritime assets, hydrocarbon resources, and fisheries.

President Ali further stated, “This aircraft will help us land on the short strips in the deep hinterland. It is not an attack aircraft, but it will take us where the GDF must go.” He emphasized that the choice of the Tecnam P2012 was based on its performance capabilities, particularly its ability to operate in challenging environments, making it a true multi-role platform for military operations and humanitarian assistance.

Building on the momentum of these advancements, President Ali signalled that the GDF’s growing air capability must be matched by a strong foundation in aviation education and skills development. He further emphasized that this investment must evolve into a destination for excellence in aviation training. To this end, he has mandated the Chief of Defence Staff to develop a comprehensive plan for an aviation school that will provide both commercial pilot training and specialized defence aviation instruction.

Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, described the Tecnam P2012 as a landmark achievement in the Force’s transformation. Over the past five years, the GDF has made an unprecedented investment in air capability by acquiring six aircraft and dedicating 40 percent of its 2025 budget to the Air Corps. Brigadier Khan detailed the versatile roles these aircraft fulfill, including troop transport, aerial surveillance, humanitarian aid, search and rescue, and joint law enforcement operations targeting transnational threats such as drug and arms trafficking.

He noted too, that this acquisition is part of a broader initiative that includes the anticipated arrival of additional air assets and the construction of a new hangar in the coming months. Brigadier Khan emphasized the growing importance of the Air Corps as a critical component of national defence.

Brigadier Khan also acknowledged the Defence Board and the Legal Affairs and Finance Ministries, for their key roles in securing funding and establishing the necessary legal frameworks. He also recognized the dedication of the GDF’s internal acquisition team.

The Chief of Defence Staff reaffirmed the GDF’s commitment to training and readiness, noting that true capability lies in the ability to operate and maintain assets effectively. He underscored the duty of defence personnel to serve with excellence, as the people of Guyana deserve nothing less

With enhanced surveillance capacity, extended operational reach, and faster response capability, the Air Corps is now better equipped to protect Guyana’s people and resources amid evolving national and regional challenges.
