In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) hosted a heartfelt ceremony on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Force Conference Room to honour two of its courageous members, Warrant Officer Class Two Maurees Skeete and Private Odessa Adams. The two women stand as shining examples of strength and perseverance.
The event brought together Officers and Other Ranks in a show of solidarity, unity, and admiration. The atmosphere was both emotional and uplifting, filled with warmth, respect, and encouragement as the honourees were celebrated for their bravery, strength, and unwavering spirit throughout their journey.
Beyond its touching tributes, the ceremony served as an important reminder of the need for continued awareness, education, and support in the fight against breast cancer. It reinforced the importance of early detection, regular medical check-ups, and open conversations about health, particularly among service members who so often place their duty above personal well-being.
Delivering the feature address, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, expressed profound admiration and support for the honourees, commending their steadfast courage in confronting one of life’s greatest battles. He reminded those in attendance that these stories should serve as inspiration to others, to take charge of their health, to rely on the strength of their colleagues, and to maintain hope even in the face of adversity.
As a gesture of appreciation, Warrant Officer Class Two Skeete and Private Adams were each presented with tokens of appreciation and care hampers, symbolising the Force’s gratitude and its continued commitment to standing firmly beside its members through every challenge.
The ceremony reflected the Guyana Defence Force’s enduring family spirit, one built on compassion, strength, and unity. It also served as a powerful reminder that while the Force is trained to defend the nation, it also remains steadfast in defending the lives, health, and hearts of those who serve.
