In a move symbolic of Guyana’s deepening regional partnerships and growing international presence, a delegation from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) departed the Eugene F. Correia International Airport on Sunday for French Guiana, where they will participate in the official Bastille Day celebrations.
The delegation, comprising Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, MEM, Lieutenant Colonel Natasha Stanford-Francis, MEM, Lieutenant Colonel Julian Archer, MEM, Warrant Officer Class One Christopher Harmon, and Petty Officer Clement Joe, will represent the GDF at the annual French National Day observances on July 14.
Their mission spans July 13 to 15 and is rooted in more than ceremonial courtesy. The visit underscores the Guyana Defence Force’s continued commitment to advancing military diplomacy as a strategic arm of national security. Engagements such as this support broader objectives of regional cooperation, interoperability, and mutual respect among defence counterparts.
Bastille Day, known in France as La Fête Nationale, marks the historic storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, an event that ignited the French Revolution and gave rise to the ideals of liberty, fraternity, and equality. Celebrations are held across France and its overseas territories, often showcasing military precision, national unity, and cultural pride.
By participating in this year’s commemorations, the GDF reinforces its role not only as a national defence institution but as a diplomatic bridge between Guyana and its French-speaking neighbour. French Guiana remains a key regional partner, and continued exchanges between military personnel signal an enduring commitment to peace, dialogue, and collaboration.
The delegation’s departure speaks volumes about Guyana’s evolving approach to defence diplomacy, one that embraces not only readiness and resilience, but also respect and relationship building across borders
