GDF Launches PSC and SCC Simultaneously to Strengthen Tactical Command

The Guyana Defence Force has commenced two key leadership training programmes aimed at strengthening command within its ranks. On July 24, at the Colonel John Clarke Military School (CJCMS) in Tacama, the Force officially opened the Platoon Sergeants’ Course 2025-01 (PSC) and the Section Commanders’ Course 2025-01 (SCC).

A total of 114 ranks, including 35 on the PSC and 79 on the SCC, have embarked on this critical journey in leadership development. Their training represents a significant investment in the Force’s tactical command structure and long-term operational readiness.

Delivering the feature address at the ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Shepherd emphasized that the launch of these courses represents more than routine training. It marks a transformative milestone in the professional growth of the Force’s leaders. “These courses are not merely about acquiring tactical knowledge,” he stated. “They are about internalizing integrity, discipline, and responsibility, qualities that shape those entrusted to lead at the front lines.”

The PSC is designed to sharpen the leadership, instructional, and administrative capabilities of senior non-commissioned officers, preparing them to guide and sustain discipline, morale, and cohesion at the platoon level. While the SCC empowers junior ranks to lead small units effectively, uphold standards, and adapt to dynamic operational environments.

The simultaneous launch of these two leadership programmes reflects the GDF’s ongoing commitment to building a resilient, adaptable, and professional force. Leadership, as Lt Col Shepherd noted, begins at the section level. However, it is strengthened by those who lead from within.

Through these courses, the GDF is equipping its emerging leaders not only to execute tasks, but also to inspire action, enforce discipline, and lead decisively in every environment.
