The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) joined the Ministry of Education in supporting the first nationwide rollout of the new Physical Education initiative, which was introduced yesterday across all secondary schools in Guyana. This programme follows the directive of His Excellency, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who announced that Friday afternoons will now be dedicated to Physical Education, recreation, and sports in schools.
As part of this initiative, 34 schools within the Guyana National Cadet Corps (GNCC) were actively engaged. The GDF Sports Corps deployed instructors to four GNCC schools; Christ Church Secondary, Lodge Secondary, Brickdam Secondary, and Annandale Secondary, where they led students through warm-up and cool-down sessions. The schools’ Physical Education teachers then facilitated games and other activities, ensuring a balanced programme of fun and fitness.
This collaboration reflects the Ministry of Education’s leadership in promoting holistic student development, while highlighting the GDF’s commitment and support to national development through youth health, fitness, and discipline. By complementing the work of PE teachers, the GDF is proud to play a supporting role in advancing the President’s vision of a healthier, stronger, and more resilient Guyana.
The Guyana National Cadet Corps (GNCC) is a youth development programme jointly managed by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. Reintroduced in 2018, the GNCC is currently active in 48 secondary schools across all eleven education districts, with approximately 2,500 active members
