The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) pays tribute to Colonel (Ret’d) Leonard B. Muss, also known to many as Charles Muss or Charlie. He was a distinguished soldier, leader, and pioneer, who passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, in Virginia, USA, at the age of 90.

Colonel Muss’s remarkable military career began in the British Guiana Volunteer Force (BGVF), where he served as a Captain, and continued into the formative years of the Guyana Defence Force. As one of the earliest officers transferred from the BGVF, he played a pivotal role in shaping the character, structure, and operational foundation of the newly established Force. His leadership and vision during these critical early years helped define the GDF’s identity and set the enduring standards of professionalism, discipline, and service.

Throughout his career, Colonel Muss held senior command appointments across company, battalion, and brigade levels, culminating in his service as Force Commander. His professional development was strengthened through significant overseas military training in command leadership and operational readiness, equipping him to guide, mentor, and influence the Force during its most defining period. In recognition of his exemplary service and dedication, he was awarded the Military Efficiency Medal in 1977, an honour reflecting his unwavering commitment to duty and military excellence.

Colonel Muss leaves behind a legacy defined by steadfast leadership, devoted service, and lasting contributions to the evolution of the Guyana Defence Force. His influence continues to resonate throughout the institution he helped build, and his life’s work stands as a testament to honour, integrity, and patriotism. His leadership continues to inspire generations of officers and ranks who follow in his footsteps.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, officers, and ranks of the GDF extend their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the veteran community. Colonel (Ret’d) Leonard B. Muss’s service will forever be honoured, and his memory will remain a guiding light for the Force he helped shape.
