The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has received high commendation for its professionalism, discipline, and tangible impact in Jamaica, where its ranks are deployed in support of post-disaster recovery and reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
During an engagement with the GDF contingent at White House, Westmoreland, Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica lauded the officers and ranks for their dedication and selfless service, describing their work as a powerful demonstration of Caribbean solidarity in action. He also emphasized that the GDF’s presence and contribution are making a meaningful difference for families and communities affected by the hurricane.
The GDF contingent, comprised of skilled and disciplined personnel, has been directly involved in reconstruction activities, particularly the rebuilding of damaged homes. To date, sixty-two (62) roofs have been fully completed, with an additional seven (7) roofs currently under construction and nearing completion. These efforts have restored safety, dignity, and stability to dozens of households impacted by the disaster.
Prime Minister Holness specifically commended the Guyanese ranks for their professionalism, work ethic, and commitment to service, noting that their conduct reflects the highest standards of regional military cooperation and humanitarian response. He expressed appreciation not only for the technical expertise demonstrated on the ground, but also for the compassion and respect shown to affected residents.
The GDF’s deployment underscores its expanding role beyond traditional defence, encompassing humanitarian aid and regional cooperation.
