A resident of Recht-Door-Zee, West Bank Demerara, LR Simon’s journey into marine engineering is one of passion and adaptability. As a technician, specializing in both outboard and indoor operations, she is responsible for maintaining vessels including electrical, engineering, and plumbing tasks. Despite not holding formal certifications, she has mastered her craft through rigorous in-house training, a testament to her versatility and commitment.
Her military career is fortified by specialized courses, including the Marine Diesel Engineer Operator Course (MDEOC), the Engineer Operator Course, and the Mercury System Level 1 Training. Among her notable accomplishments is her proficiency in operating motor lifeboats (MLB), a vital skill in marine operations. While she has gained substantial expertise through hands-on training, Simon is determined to formalize her knowledge. “I want to pursue electrical engineering at the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI),” she shares, emphasizing her commitment to continuous growth.
As the only female in her unit working on engines, she faces unique challenges, but her resolve remains steadfast. “It’s not about proving others wrong; it’s about showing that with determination and hard work, women can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields,” she asserts.
Beyond her technical expertise, LR Simon’s story serves as an inspiration to women across the country, demonstrating that no barrier is insurmountable. Looking ahead, she hopes to advance her education, expand her skill set, and motivate other women to follow in her footsteps.
