MESSAGE BY CHIEF OF STAFF BRIGADIER OMAR KHAN ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GUYANA NATIONAL RESERVE.

Written by

Today, as we stand on the precipice of celebrating the 5th anniversary of the resuscitation of the Guyana National Reserve, this momentous occasion prompts reflection on the remarkable journey we have embarked upon and the commendable contributions of our dedicated reservists. It also inspires us to look forward with anticipation to the promising future that lies ahead.

In the half-decade since its revival, the Guyana National Reserve has emerged as an indispensable complement to our regular forces. The unwavering commitment and enthusiasm exhibited by our reserve ranks have left an indelible mark on the annals of our defense history. Whether participating in military parades, the Defense Operation Centre, Inter-Unit Competitions, Men on Mission Events, or actively engaging in community service through clean-up exercises organized by the National Enhancement Committee, their dedication has been nothing short of exemplary.

This year’s annual camp stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence, with 350 ranks immersing themselves in intensive training. Beyond honing their skills, these individuals have undergone several Grade 3 Military Courses and the Junior Leaders Course, showcasing a commitment to continuous learning that is integral to elevating the overall operational readiness of the National Reserve.

A highlight among our achievements has been the commendable expansion of the National Cadet Corps. With the inclusion of 14 new schools, the corps now boasts a strength of 2348 youths. The Cadet Corps serves not only as a bastion of discipline, leadership, and patriotism but also as a beacon of hope for our nation’s future. It instills in our youth the values essential to the ethos of our defense forces.

I am pleased with their strategic partnership with the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps which will foster an environment of shared learning and best practices. This collaboration transcends borders, providing our cadets with a unique opportunity to broaden their perspectives and engage in a global exchange of ideas. It exemplifies our commitment to building bridges and strengthening international ties.

The recent success of the Cadet Corps Camp, accommodating 368 youths, further underscores the positive impact of our initiatives. Beyond individual growth, these events contribute to our collective strength by cultivating resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills.

As we celebrate this anniversary, let us not only celebrate the achievements of the past five years but also look forward with optimism and determination. The Guyana National Reserve, through its multifaceted contributions, plays a pivotal role in fortifying the strength and versatility of our Force. I extend my deepest appreciation to every member of the National Reserve for their unwavering commitment and selfless service to our beloved nation.

I urge the Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, to let us continue to strive for excellence, uphold the values that define the Guyana Defence Force and work towards a stronger and more resilient Guyana.

Thank you for your service and happy Reservists’ Day!
