ONE INFANTRY BATTALION CHANGES COMMAND

The command of the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) One Infantry Battalion has officially changed, marking not only a leadership transition but also the retirement of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Selwyn Austin after nearly three decades of distinguished and selfless service.

The Change of Command Parade was held at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri, where Lt Col Austin formally handed over command of the GDF’s main effort to Lieutenant Colonel Dale De Mendonca. In attendance were the Colonel General Staff, Captain (CG) Vernon Burnett, other Branch Heads, members of the Central Management Committee (CMC), officers, other ranks, and specially invited guests.

It was a proud yet poignant moment for Lt Col Austin, who brought the curtain down on a career that began in 1996 and has since left a lasting mark on every unit and rank he served. In his farewell remarks, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to his wife, family, friends, and the many former and serving senior officers who mentored and shaped his leadership journey.

He also extended sincere thanks to the current leadership of the Force for the confidence placed in him during a pivotal period, as the Battalion operated amid persistent threats to Guyana’s territorial integrity. “It was an exciting journey, while at the same time challenging in several respects. I must accept I did not get everything right, but I tried to ensure that we did make the effort,” he stated. Offering advice to those still in active service, he reminded them, “To those who continue to experience constant gunfire in your direction, remember the drills.”

Lt Col Austin emphasized the importance of continued investment in the Battalion’s development, both in human and material terms. “As the Battalion’s responsibilities expand, so too must its capabilities. Our men and women must be given every possible resource to build awareness, so that they can adapt and remain agile in today’s evolving threat environment,” he urged.

With those words, Lieutenant Colonel Selwyn Austin bid farewell to active military service, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering commitment, disciplined leadership, and resilience.

The Chief of Defence Staff, officers, and other ranks of the Guyana Defence Force extend heartfelt thanks to Lt Col Austin for his outstanding service and exemplary leadership. They wish him a fulfilling and peaceful retirement and welcome Lieutenant Colonel Dale De Mendonca as he assumes command of the One Infantry Battalion.
