OUTGOING BRAZILIAN DEFENCE, NAVAL, AND ARMY ATTACHÉ HONOURED WITH MILITARY EFFICIENCY MEDAL

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) today bid farewell to Colonel José Roberto De Vasconcellos Cruz, the outgoing Brazilian Defence, Naval, and Army Attaché, who will officially conclude his tenure in Guyana at the end of this month. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering cooperation between the Brazilian Armed Forces and the GDF, Colonel Cruz was awarded the Military Efficiency Medal (MEM), the nation’s third-highest military honour.

The Military Efficiency Medal, conferred by His Excellency, the President and Commander in Chief, Dr Irfaan Ali, is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding service beyond the call of duty to the Guyana Defence Force, while significantly contributing to the enhancement of bilateral relations with other military forces. Colonel Cruz’s dedication and efforts have been instrumental in advancing the longstanding partnership between Guyana and Brazil.

Upon assuming his role as Brazilian Defence, Naval, and Army Attaché, Colonel Cruz not only maintained the strong relationship between the two nations but also expanded and deepened cooperation across all areas of engagement between the GDF and the Brazilian Armed Forces. His leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact on the collaborative efforts of both forces.

During the ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, presented Colonel Cruz with the medal and praised his exemplary service in furthering the decades-old relationship between Guyana and Brazil. Brigadier Khan expressed his optimism for even stronger ties with Brazil, acknowledging the country as a key partner in Guyana’s development.

Colonel Cruz described the conferral of the Military Efficiency Medal as a significant milestone in his career. Reflecting on his time in Guyana, he expressed deep gratitude, stating that his experience in the country was unforgettable, and that Guyana would always hold a special place in his heart. He also extended his heartfelt thanks to Brigadier Khan and the officers and ranks of the GDF for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.
