His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali

President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces

His Excellency, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, was sworn in as Guyana’s Ninth Executive President on August 2, 2020.

As Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the President exercises supreme authority over the Guyana Defence Force. In this capacity, the President provides strategic guidance on national defence policy, authorises operational deployments, and upholds the constitutional and sovereign interests of Guyana. The Commander-in-Chief represents the unity of the nation and the enduring link between the military and the people it serves.

Defence Board

The Guyana Defence Board serves as the principal statutory body responsible for the command, discipline, and administration of the Guyana Defence Force. Operating under the authority of the Minister, the Board provides strategic oversight on matters pertaining to the Force’s governance. It does not, however, direct the operational employment of the Force, this responsibility is assigned to the Chief of Staff, who acts in accordance with the general or specific directions of the Minister.

Composition
The composition of the Defence Board is defined by statute and includes:

The President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana (Chairman);

The Prime Minister;

The Minister responsible for home affairs;

The Chief of Defence Staff of the Guyana Defence Force;

Up to three additional members appointed by the Minister, as required.

 The CDS is an officer appointed by the President, in whom the command of the Force is vested.

Senior financial officer, responsible for managing resources and ensuring the Force remains well-supported and accountable.

Lt Col Natasha Stanford-Francis

Inspector General

Leads audits, inspections, and evaluations to maintain accountability and operational effectiveness across the Force.

Captain (CG) Vernon Burnett

Colonel General Staff

Directs operational planning and ensures the Force remains ready, integrated, and aligned with national defence objectives.

Lt Col Eon Murray

Adjutant General

Leads policy, discipline, and military justice, upholding standards across all ranks with fairness and professionalism.

Warrant Officer Class 1 William Richmond

Force Sergeant Major

Embodies the highest standards of soldiering and discipline, guiding the enlisted ranks with strength and example.
