The Guyana Defence Force in collaboration with the Guyana Post Office, earlier today unveiled a commemorative postage stamp honouring the life and legacy of late aviator, Captain Roland Da Silva.
Captain Da Silva’s aviation career spanned from 1953 to 2006, accumulating 36, 152 flying hours. He achieved several significant milestones, becoming the first Guyanese to join British Guiana Airways and hold a Commercial and Instruments Rating Pilot’s License. He is recognised as a trailblazer in Guyanese commercial aviation and is also the first and only Guyanese who received the Cacique Crown of Valour in 1971 for his bravery during the Rupununi uprising in 1969 and the retaking of Guyanese territory from Suriname. His interception of critical information and subsequent strategic actions played a pivotal role in quashing the rebellion.

His strategic brilliance, operational prowess, and unwavering dedication to aviation make him an enduring figure in Guyanese and international aviation history.
Chief of Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan in brief remarks acknowledged Captain Da Silva’s life and accomplishments, expressing his deep honor to host the dedication ceremony for him. He recognized Captain Da Silva as a distinguished Guyanese and a true hero.
Acting Post Master General Tiffany Williams noted this Philatelic project is a privilege as it celebrated and commemorated the legacy and contributions of Captain Da Silva.
The pair of stamps were unveiled by Acting President Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips and Ms. Jennifer Da Silva, Captain Da Silva’s widow and children.
Roland Da Silva Jr. in a brief remarks expressed his gratitude for the acknowledgement of his father’s achievements. He also noted his joy at being able to share the news of the stamps creation with his father prior to his passing last year.
The pair of stamps will be available to the public from Monday February 26, 2024, at a cost for 500 dollars.
