The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has officially commenced the 60th Edition of its Annual Inter-Unit Swimming and Track and Field Championship, marking a significant milestone in the Force’s history as it celebrates six decades of dedicated service to the nation.
The championship began on Sunday, October 5, 2025, with two exciting opening events: the Inter-Unit Road Relay and the Swimming Competition, held at the GDF Playfield, Base Camp Ayanganna, and the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, respectively. Both events showcased the enthusiasm, teamwork, and competitive spirit that continue to define the men and women of the Force.
Prior to the commencement of both activities, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, briefed the ranks and extended best wishes to the participating teams before giving the start order.
The road relay covered a total distance of 9 kilometres, starting at the GDF Playfield and traversing the Rupert Craig Highway (northern and southern carriageways), Bel Air, and the Kitty Public Road, before returning to the playfield in five legs. The relay concluded with Base Camp Stephenson taking first place, followed by the Special Forces in second, and the 1st Infantry Battalion finishing third.

In the pool, the Coast Guard dominated the men’s category, followed by the GDF Training Corps and the 3rd Infantry Battalion. In the women’s division, Defence Force Headquarters led with consistent performances, while the Coast Guard and Base Camp Stephenson placed second and third, respectively.
When the combined scores were tallied, the Coast Guard emerged overall leader, demonstrating strength, coordination, and balance across both divisions. Defence Force Headquarters and Base Camp Stephenson also performed commendably, remaining close contenders as the championship continues.
The 60th Edition of the Annual Inter-Unit Championship continues tomorrow with the athletics segment at Base Camp Ayanganna and will culminate with the finals on Friday, October 10.
This year’s championship, held as part of the GDF’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, reflects the Force’s enduring commitment to excellence, discipline, teamwork, and unity—qualities that have defined its proud service to Guyana for six decades.
