The Takutu Bridge recently became the setting for a joint display of Guyana-Brazil military cooperation as the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Brazilian Army commemorated Brazil’s 204th Independence anniversary with a flag-raising ceremony along the shared frontier.
The ceremony brought together officers and ranks from 3 Infantry Battalion, GDF, led by Second Lieutenant Mark Blair, and the first Special Border Platoon of the Brazilian Army, led by First Lieutenant Allan Ribeiro Pantoja.
The Takutu Bridge, which spans the Takutu River, connects Lethem in Guyana with Bonfimin Brazil’s Roraima State. Since its completion in 2009, the bridge has served as an important link between the two countries, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the border.
The flags of Guyana and Brazil were raised together on the bridge, creating a fitting setting for the commemoration and symbolising the strong relationship between the two countries. The event also served as a vital opportunity to reinforce the professional bonds between units deployed along the shared border. These relationships are essential for effective coordination between our forces and for maintaining a secure border environment.
The GDF is committed to strengthening its military partnership with Brazil, with a strategic emphasis on enhancing collaboration along Guyana’s southern frontier. This focus aims to bolster regional security and promote mutual interests in defence cooperation.
