Technical skills have a place beyond the classroom, workshop or job site. They are also essential to military service. At the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Fair at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) engaged participants and explained in what manner technical expertise is applied across a range of military roles.
Several GDF units displayed equipment and specialist tools used in their daily work. Ranks engaged young people, explaining how the equipment is used, the training required and the skills needed for different military roles.
The displays gave students a clearer understanding of how technical expertise supports military service. Alongside its combat roles, the GDF depends on technical skills in areas such as engineering, communications, aviation, logistics and maintenance.
The engagement also gave interested persons the opportunity to speak directly with GDF ranks, learn about the work performed across the Force, and consider how their technical interests and vocational skills could be applied in service to Guyana.
Additionally, the GDF established a recruitment booth, where interested individuals discussed entry requirements, the recruitment process and the range of roles available within the Force.
The GDF’s participation placed technical education within the wider context of national service. It showed that the skills developed through TVET can be applied to critical military functions while providing young Guyanese with a pathway to
professional development and service to the nation.
