In line with its commitment to operational readiness and professional development, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Training Corps has launched another cycle of the Skill-at-Arms Course (SAAC), with 31 soldiers officially beginning the intensive six-week program.

The course is designed to enhance weapon proficiency and tactical skills across all ranks. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified to serve as coaches for Stage 1–3 Battle Shot Training and will be equipped with advanced marksmanship abilities using platoon-level and small arms employed by the GDF.

The curriculum includes a well-rounded set of modules such as Field Craft, Coaching Techniques, First Aid, Weapon Handling, and Weapon Proficiency. Trainees will also take part in practical assessments and scenario-based exercises to how well they’ve grasped the material and how effectively they can apply their skills under pressure.

During the official opening ceremony, Warrant Officer Class Two Lloyd Woodruff encouraged the soldiers to embrace the journey and stay resilient throughout the demanding course. “Believe in yourself, and you can do amazing things. This course will push you mentally and physically. You’ll feel exhausted at times and may even doubt your ability to continue. But remember every challenge makes you stronger. Progress happens one step at a time. Stay focused, and you’ll reach your goals,” said WO2 Woodruff. At the end of the course, outstanding performers will be recognized during an awards ceremony honoring excellence, discipline, and achievement.

The SAAC remains a vital component of the GDF’s efforts to build a well-trained, mission-ready force, maintaining high standards in marksmanship and combat effectiveness.
