GDF CONTINUES OFFICER DEVELOPMENT WITH SENIOR COMMAND AND STAFF COURSE 20

Written by

Twenty junior officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) have begun their progression towards senior leadership with the commencement of Senior Command and Staff Course 20. The officers, drawn from nine units across the Force, will undergo an intensive fourteen-week programme designed to prepare them for higher command and staff responsibilities.

The course, delivered over two terms, covers a broad spectrum of professional military education, including communication skills, staff duties, military law, leadership studies, combined arms operations, environmental and global security studies, and administration. It is specifically structured to equip officers with the ability to apply command and staff principles effectively within increasingly complex operational environments.

This iteration marks the first restructured Senior Command and Staff Course conducted in collaboration with the National Defence Institute and the University of Guyana. The revised framework now allows participants to earn an internationally recognised academic certificate, representing a significant step in the professionalisation of officer development within the Force. Further restructuring is underway to bring both the Junior Command and Staff Course and the Senior Leaders’ Course under similar academic accreditation.

Commanding Officer of the Training Corps, Lieutenant Colonel Drumson McCaulay, emphasised that the course facilitates the transition from tactical leadership to strategic staff responsibilities. He highlighted that while junior leaders are primarily focused on execution, senior officers must anticipate future and implied tasks, develop systems to mitigate challenges, and support commanders through sound planning and coordination.

Delivering the feature address, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, underscored the critical role these officers will play in shaping the future of the Force and serving the people of Guyana. He framed the course as a defining phase in the professional development of the Officers.

Brigadier Khan emphasised that as officers entrusted with the command of personnel, resources, and weapons, they carry a responsibility to the nation that goes beyond competence alone. He reminded them that the people of Guyana expect—and deserve—officers who will exercise sound judgement and do what is right at all times. Integrity, he noted, must remain the foundation of command.

He further outlined a knowledge spectrum encompassing the international and regional environment, national priorities, the institutional framework of the GDF, and the individual responsibilities of the officer. He stressed the importance of understanding and applying the principles of ends, ways, and means, noting that modern military leadership demands the ability to connect strategic intent with operational execution.

The Chief of Defence Staff also highlighted that as Guyana continues to evolve, particularly as an oil-producing nation, officers must be prepared to operate within an increasingly complex and dynamic security environment. This, he noted, requires intellectual agility, strategic awareness, and the capacity to engage meaningfully across multiple domains of defence and national interest.

He reminded participants that as officers preparing for senior leadership, they are required to move beyond tactical execution and function as the thinking arm of the commander. Continuous self-development, professional discipline, and the ability to operate effectively in complex environments, he noted, will define their legacy as leaders within the Force.

In closing, Brigadier Khan, MSS, expressed confidence in the preparation being provided, noting that the future effectiveness of the Force will be shaped by how these officers think, lead, and apply their knowledge. He also acknowledged the contribution of the National Defence Institute as a key partner in strengthening the intellectual and professional foundation of the officer corps.

Also in attendance at the opening ceremony were Colonel General Staff, Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, Commandant of the Guyana National Reserve, Colonel Lorraine Foster, MSM, Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency and Chairman of the National Defence Institute, Colonel Sheldon Howell, MSM, along with Branch Heads and other senior officers.
