TRIBUTE TO MR. THOMAS W. PRINCE (STOKES), SOLDIER 1058

It is with deep respect and solemn gratitude that the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, Officers, and Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) pay tribute to the late Mr. Thomas W. Prince (Stokes), Soldier 1058. His creative vision and unwavering patriotism played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of the Guyana Defence Force at a defining moment in our nation’s history.

Mr. Prince began his service in the British Guiana Volunteer Force, the military reserve, where by 1965, he had risen to the rank of Corporal. That same year, as Guyana stood on the cusp of independence, he was entrusted with a task of national significance: to help conceptualise and design the ceremonial regalia, emblems, and regimental colours of a new and sovereign Defence Force.

While such undertakings often involve the input and collaboration of multiple hands and minds, Mr. Prince’s influence was unmistakable. His contributions to the creation of the GDF’s crest, ceremonial uniform, and regimental standard were guided by a deep sense of purpose and national pride. These designs, which continue to represent the GDF today, reflect the collective aspirations of a people and the vision of an artist committed to excellence.

Every detail bore significance: the scarlet and green fields of the regimental standard, the agricultural fork and machete crossed with dignity, the proud Canje Pheasant in the crest, all symbols carefully chosen to reflect Guyana’s land, people, and struggle for freedom. Mr. Prince drew inspiration from nature, history, and his own lived experiences, offering designs that were unanimously approved by the Council of Ministers, an enduring testament to their power and resonance.

Though he began his professional life as a draftsman with the British Guiana Credit Corporation, Mr. Prince answered the call to serve both in uniform and through his art.

Throughout his life, Mr. Prince remained devoted to the GDF. His oft-repeated conviction that “the only ex-soldier is a dead one” spoke to his enduring loyalty. His legacy lives on in every soldier who wears the uniform he helped shape, in every raising of the Regimental Colours, and in the traditions upheld by the Force to this day.

As we honour his life and contributions, we also acknowledge with respect the broader context in which they were realised. Mr. Prince’s work reflects not only his own remarkable talent and dedication, but also the spirit of shared service and unity that defines our institution.

The Guyana Defence Force expresses its profound appreciation for Mr. Prince’s lasting impact. He has left an indelible mark on our history, and we are privileged to carry his legacy forward with pride, duty, and honour.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
