Members of the Guyana Defence Force joined the Scout Association of Guyana for the official opening of the 116th Anniversary National Camp. In attendance were Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency, Colonel Sheldon Howell, MSM, Honourable Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Charles Ramson Jr, Chargé d’Affaires of the Canadian High Commission, Mr. Daniel Bood, and Director of Youth, Pandit Suresh Singh.

Following the opening ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, visited the camp later in the day, where he engaged with participants through a walk-around and interactive leadership talk. Brigadier Khan encouraged the scouts to remain disciplined, focused, and confident in their capacity to lead. He emphasized that leadership is developed through character, service, and perseverance, values shared by both the Guyana Defence Force and the scouting movement.

Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Guyana, Mr. Yonnick David, highlighted the significance of Brigadier Khan’s engagement with the youths. He explained that hearing directly from senior military leaders provides valuable insight and inspiration. “Meeting leaders who have overcome challenges and achieved success helps these young people see the possibilities for growth, service, and leadership in their own lives. While the younger scouts may admire the uniform, the older participants are at a stage where important life decisions are being shaped. Engaging with role models who have walked similar paths gives them encouragement and motivation,” he said.

The camp also provides a space for scouts to develop skills in campsite construction, team-building, problem-solving, and to strengthen friendships across regions. The 116-year-old scouting movement continues to promote discipline, service to community, and the development of strong moral character among Guyana’s youths. This year’s camp not only celebrates the historic milestone but also encourages unity and cultural exchange among participants, strengthening ties between scout groups nationwide.

The Guyana Defence Force remains committed to supporting national youth development initiatives.
