MEN ON MISSION MARKS THIRD ANNIVERSARY WITH WALK THROUGH GEORGETOWN

Joint Services members, government ministers, and other dignitaries turned out early this morning for a commemorative walk held in observance of the third anniversary of the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative. The activity also followed closely on the heels of International Men’s Day, observed earlier this week, adding symbolic significance to the gathering.

Representing His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips led the walk and delivered the feature remarks. He commended the CEO Lieutenant Colonel Bhageshwar Murli and the leadership of the Mission for the remarkable work achieved over the past three years, noting that the initiative has touched communities across the nation and provided essential support.

The Prime Minister praised the men for their leadership and commitment and also acknowledged the women who participated in the walk, noting that their presence strengthened the spirit of unity and shared purpose that the event sought to promote.

He reminded participants that the walk was not simply a physical exercise, but “a walk of purpose and intent,” symbolising the responsibility of men as protectors, builders, and role models for the next generation. He emphasised the importance of guiding young men, strengthening families, and advancing key partnerships, such as MoM’s collaboration with the prison system to support rehabilitation and reintegration of persons preparing to re-enter society. “When you walk with intention, you walk with strength and unity,” he said, encouraging all gathered to continue changing lives and helping to positively transform the nation.

The event began at the Everest Cricket Ground, where participants engaged in stretches and a warm-up session before stepping off promptly at 0600 hours.

From Everest Ground, participants proceeded north to the seawall road, then west toward the Pegasus Hotel, before turning south along Main Street all the way to the Bank of Guyana. The walk then continued east into Church Street, north into Camp Street, and finally looped back to the Everest Ground, completing a route that traversed several key areas of Georgetown.

Chief of Defence Staff and Chairman of the Men on Mission Initiative, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, also participated in the activity. He described the walk as a meaningful success, remarking that “starting a day with a walk is a day to live for,” and emphasising the importance of wellness, discipline, and unity in national service.

Brigadier Khan extended gratitude to all those directly involved, acknowledging their invaluable contributions over the past three years. He reaffirmed that MoM, a Presidential initiative, remains focused on uplifting lives, supporting families, strengthening communities, and inspiring men to embrace their responsibility as positive forces within society. Today’s walk, he noted, served both as a celebration of achievements to date and a renewed commitment to the Mission’s continued service to Guyana.

The third anniversary observance concluded with a powerful message: purpose, service, and unity remain at the core of the Men on Mission initiative, guiding its transformative work across the country.
