The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Training Corps continues to advance its mandate of developing highly skilled, disciplined, and professional soldiers. Today, 28 ranks successfully completed two critical instructor courses designed to support upward mobility and sustain the high standards expected across the Force.
Seventeen Senior Non-Commissioned Officers graduated from the Skill-at-Arms Instructor (SAAIC) Course, while 11 ranks completed the Drill Instructor Course (DIC). With these new additions to its cadre of instructors, the GDF has strengthened its training capability and is well-positioned for next year’s intensive training calendar.
Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Dewayne Stephen emerged as the Best Graduating Student on the SAAIC Course. Other awardees included Runner-up Student Sergeant (SGT) Nicholas Richards and Best Teaching Practice recipient SSGT Jancyah Cummings.
For the Drill Instructor Course, SGT Oswin Gray captured both Best Graduating Student and Best Teaching Practice, while SSGT Kevor Williams received Runner-up Student.
Delivering closing remarks for both courses, Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Mark Yaw underscored the importance of these disciplines to the operational effectiveness of the GDF. “Drill is the foundation of military discipline, it shapes the bearing, confidence, and unity of our ranks. Skill-at-Arms is the core of our profession, ensuring every soldier remains competent, safe, and effective. By completing these courses, you have demonstrated readiness to uphold these standards and pass them on.”
WO1 Yaw also reminded the graduates that their new skills place them at the forefront of shaping the next generation of soldiers. “The Guyana Defence Force depends on instructors who can lead professionally, patiently, and with the highest regard for safety and discipline. You now carry that responsibility. The soldiers you train will reflect your example, your voice, your attitude, and your commitment to excellence.”
As the GDF continues to invest in the development of its human capital, the successful completion of these courses signals the Force’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its training capacity and raising standards across all levels. The newly qualified instructors now join the ranks of those entrusted with shaping discipline, competence, and professionalism within the military.
